Post your Digital Storytelling Project Here!
So I want to have my final project be a movie of sorts, but I would like to have a lot of audio over a still frame included as well. I have a lot of raw data from the iRiver and would like to use a lot of that. I think the "This American Life" radio show is actually quite wonderful and would like to mimic how the show is compiled. I would obviously do it a little differently as there isn't any video along with the radio show but I like the way it is set up. I feel like a documentary would be boring so I would like to make the movie as personal as possible. This is my story and I want it to show this point in my life rather than a lead up to this point. I don't really feel like it would be as interesting to delve into what the future might bring but rather what is going on right now in my junior year.
-Peter
I think I have come up with a vague idea of how I want to lay my project out. I feel like I need to have somethings to do with the future even if I want it to be more focused around the here and now. Per Jil's outline lower on this page I will lay out my acts.
Act 1 - "A Day in the Life of Me" - I want to put together a video/audio compilation of a day in my life from wake up to head down on the pillow.
Act 2 - "Summer Hell and Hopefully an Internship/Legal Aide..." - This would be an opportunity for me to lay out for my project what my next few steps will be to get to law school and all the work I have to do just to apply.
Act 3 - "More and More School, Then the Real World" - I want to take this act to do some documentary work with law schools and then how these schools lead to life after school. I would use most of my New York research here.

This is my Act I Storyboard
For my final project I want to put together a first person narrative documentary about my trip and the quest in becoming a professional actor and the busy lifestyle of the city (mainly the beauty behind it). I want the doc to be very artistic and conceptual. I have alot of video feed of the city and the sounds of everyday life. I also have some podcasts that I want to incorporate into the film. I want this piece to be very personal and less about the facts, more about the process and me. I would like to make more raw videos like the one I made on my directing piece. I want to insert this video through the documentary.

EDIT WITH MORE DETAIL
After lab on friday I thought more about the workings of my "film". And this what I want it to be, a short film. I would like to have third different acts, each one being relatively short.
Act 1- The Sounds and sights of the city to a new actor (first person)
Act 2- Fears and Doubts about making the quest to making a professional actor a lifestyle.
Act 3- The moment when I realized that this was a business and an artform and that I could succeed in if I really wanted it.
Hopefully this film will convey my personal journey and discovery of what I hope will be my life's work.

I want my final project to be an animated video that outlines what I've learned this semester. I may want to create my own animation, but I definitely want to manipulate existing images. Sort of a combo between Monty Python and VideoLit.
-Tori
Tori's Outline:
I've been thinking about animation and making my project interactive. I've decided the animation would only be a supplementary factor. What I really want is an interactive collage of sorts, with images or phrases serving as links to windows were I can expolre that idea more thoroughly through text, audio, video and photographs. Catgories would be answers to questions I have had this semester:
- why do I want to be an actor?
- challenge
- intellectual pursuit
- what I get from it
- why do I want to do theatre?
- directing/management
- people
- ever-changing
- theories/criticism that changed my perspective
- what have I learned experiences covering the last four years?
- classes: UMW, Studio, Shakespeare Theatre and the NYU fiasco
- productions
- Lady Winderemere's Fan
- auditions
- what I learned form this class?
- interviews
- favorite moments
- suprises
- where do I want to go next?
- the theatre I want to be a part of
- roles I want to play
- what I want to do to grow

OK, this is what I've come up with...I may change it, but I've thought out some of the acts in great depth, and others, not as much...
Act I: The Fact Sheet. This act will be primarily me speaking with white words on a black screen to supplement what I'm saying. It begins with me giving "the facts" about myself i.e. Name: Jenna Doolittle, Age: 20, Height, Weight, etc. After the facts are out there, I talk about how vulnerable and scary it is to say that I may want to pursue a career in acting and the way people react to my saying that.
Act II: Finding Me. This act is about me trying to figure out who I am. It has me repeating all different adjectives that describe myself while images of myself come across the screen. I will probably use both video and still images in this portion as I discuss why it is so important as an actor to know yourself. I will use an anecdote from Tori and my meeting with Myra when she said, "You are an actor, but you are also somebody's daughter, cousin, somebody's lover..."
Act III: Why Theatre? In this act I talk about why I am so passionate about theatre and why I want my career to be in this field. This will probably be me talking with video footage of all different aspects of theatre.
Act IV: Still Searching is going to be pretty raw footage of me talking into the camera about how I'm scared because I don't know what I want to do exactly, but how I'm looking forward to the future and how I think I want to move to NY when I graduate.
I'd like to use something like SlideShowPro for my project. I'd like there to be consistant audio throughout with manipulated still pictures and an occasional video clip to support what is being said. Though I'd like to use images and video, the first act of my project will be mostly focused on audio and I want to use sound effects like they do in "This American Life" to make it more interesting.
-Jenna
I'd like to use some of the same elements that "This American Life" does (music, witty narration, sound effects, etc.). I do want to include a lot of B-roll video footage, along with still images, but I want the project to be laced with narrative and snippets from interviews I conducted. I'm really excited about sharing with everyone the point I'm at right now. I'm at this important juncture and I'm about to make some major decisions that may possibly affect the rest of my life. I want to talk about my journey and make it as interesting as possible. The narrative should be specific to my story.
-Jess
Jess' Outline:
Act I: A Premature Planner.
Digital Medium: Still photos and images with narration.
- The stunning realization that I didn’t have my future mapped out. I was no expert and I wasn’t at all sure of the path I wanted to take in the professional theatre world after graduation.
- To highlight this, I'll talk about my conversation with Gregg in the hotel lobby in Florida- he told me I don’t want to be big fish in small pond.
- I'll also talk about some of the disappointment I felt in interviewing with not so great regional theatres, including my interview form hell.
Digital Medium: audio clips and text with narration- possibly one video clip.
- Through my interviews of so many accomplished SMs, I realized that stage managing is even more work than I thought it was.
- I'll use my Radio City experience and play a clip form my Craig Jacobs interview to talk about how much technical knowledge is involved. I may show my reaction video to Craig.
- I'll talk about Spook and Roy Harris in conjunction with the level of artistic talant that is involved.
- Passion as motivation- clips from my interview with Martha Donaldson.
Digital Medium: B-roll video and music with narration/audio clips...possibly a few stills.
- Talk about how I finally came to the realization that I defintiely for sure want to work in NY.
- B-roll of me in NY, streets of NY. Narrate with some of the random NY experiences I had, like getting lost on the subway and finding my way, walking on the streets at night, and eating hot dogs in the park. I loved it all.
- Shadowing Laurie made me realize how much I wanted to do that.
- Surprised myself by turning down regional job offers. They didn't appeal anymore. I realized that I can make NY happen if I put my all into it and make it happen.
I want my final project to use probably both video and the slideshow pro thing (something with flash??). I want to follow my journey from when I came in to school planning to be a theatre major and how I discovered my love for hair and makeup design and where I might end up in that field.
-Sarah
Act 1:
- a glimpse into my highschool theatre life and why theatre became my chosen profession (i know, yuck highschool theatre but its important)
- explaining to family and friends that i wanted to be a theatre major
Act 2:
- Welcome to Mary Wash!! Freshman year and the "do i really want to devote my life to this?!!?"
- Finding my niche in the department
- Theatre, yes! But what exactly do I want to do in theatre???
- I want to be a makeup designer!!! a what????
Act 3:
- New York
- Figuring out how exactly you get into my chosen area of "the business"
- First makeup design (Loves Labor & makeup design class)
- oh dear graduation is soon... and what am I going to do?? lifeplans
*of course this is just a rough draft and organized in a crazy me way of organizing but i hope everyone gets the gist*
Storyboard for Act 3
I want to do something similar to This American Life and kind of tell the story of how I got interested in music, which led me to theatre on a highschool level and the differences between my education then and my experience now. This may incorporate a slide show of sorts or something. I want to focus more on the audio and music backgrounds and sound effects.

+ I hear musical for the fourth time when they told me this department didn't do musicals very often. Aren't I lucky?
+ Senior Project preparation.
+ What do I do with all this free time? "What free time?" you may ask...exactly!
